Yes, your participation in the petition is getting the right people's attention, regarding the proposed closure of the Thurston Loop to motorized users.

It is understood that there is a meeting with the proponents of this project tonight January 26, 2023. We are hoping to get an update on this meeting and if so it will be posted here.

Again Thank You All for your Support

Some of you may not be aware of what is being written in the proposal, so I will copy a few highlights here.

  • Importantly, The IUA and potential EVA are both landscapes heavily damaged by clear cut logging and ongoing unsanctioned motorized
activity. There is no enforcement or oversight of these areas and as a result, many trails have been built over the years thru sensitive
habitat, impacted wildlife values eg. Mtn Goats, threatened ecosystems, water quality, increased wildfire risks and many other negative
impacts as a result. Therefore the project has the ability to substantially enhance and protect these landscapes from these negative
impacts and vastly improve what is currently an unsustainable and undesirable situation.
  • Currently over 20,000 people hike in the area (Mt Cheam, Elk Mtn, Mercer and Thurston areas), with an estimated >2000 motorized ATV visits each year, and >3000 trucks/SUVs accessing the Mt Cheam hiking trail.
  • Four gates are proposed for the project to control road access into the western arm of the upper Chipmunk Creek watershed as well as access to the Summit Station and control ATV traffic along Codeine Ridge. Three gates will be located on the upper Chipmunk Creek FSR. One gate will be located on Mt Thurston FSR. Access to the Summit Station will be controlled by a Gate located approx 2.6 km to the south of the Summit Station adjacent to the Construction Staging Area. Access to Codiene ridge will be controlled by a gate located approx 4.5 km west of the Summit Station where Codeine Ridge intersects with the upper Chipmunk Creek FSR.
