Since this petition was first launched, even larger developments have been proposed, including a 48-storey tower in the heart of Burwood. This demonstrates why residents must continue speaking up before Burwood’s character is changed forever.

Burwood is at a crossroads.

Burwood is more than just another suburb. It is a vibrant, family-friendly community with beautiful heritage streets, local businesses, schools, parks and a strong sense of belonging.

But our suburb is being pushed beyond its limits.

The latest proposal for a 48-storey tower at 121–133 Burwood Road and 36–40 Railway Parade is yet another example of development that places developer profits ahead of residents and the long-term future of our community.

Burwood has already experienced enormous growth. We understand that change is inevitable, but growth must be balanced, sustainable and supported by the infrastructure our community needs.

Instead, we are seeing proposal after proposal for taller buildings, increased density and plans that fundamentally change the character of our suburb.

Burwood deserves better.

We are concerned about:

🚗 Traffic and Parking

Burwood’s roads are already gridlocked during peak periods.

Anyone who has tried to enter or leave Westfield Burwood, drive along Burwood Road, or find parking near the station knows the congestion has reached unacceptable levels.

Adding hundreds more apartments without significantly improving road infrastructure and parking will only make the situation worse.

🏗 Excessive High-Rise Development

Proposals for towers approaching 50 storeys are completely out of character for Burwood.

They create overshadowing, reduce privacy, increase wind tunnel effects and permanently change our skyline.

Burwood should not become another CBD.

🌳 Loss of Heritage and Community Character

Burwood has beautiful heritage buildings and tree-lined streets that make it unique.

Once these are overshadowed or replaced, they can never be recovered.

Future generations deserve to enjoy Burwood’s history—not just endless concrete towers.

Families choose Burwood because it offers community, schools, parks and a suburban lifestyle close to the city.

We should be investing in:

More green space
Better playgrounds
Improved community facilities
Safer streets
Better transport and infrastructure
—not simply increasing residential density.

🚓 Community Safety

We also remain concerned about proposals to expand Burwood into a 24-hour nightlife precinct.

Residents deserve to feel safe walking our streets at night without increased noise, alcohol-related incidents and anti-social behaviour.

Burwood should remain a place where families and older residents feel comfortable living.

We are calling on Burwood Council and the Mayor to:

Reject excessive high-rise developments that are inconsistent with Burwood’s character.
Oppose the proposed 48-storey development at 121–133 Burwood Road and 36–40 Railway Parade.
Protect Burwood’s heritage conservation areas and historic streetscapes.
Ensure infrastructure keeps pace before approving additional high-density housing.
Prioritise parks, trees, community facilities and family-friendly public spaces.
Reject plans for a 24-hour nightlife precinct that reduce residential amenity.
Listen to residents—not just developers.
Burwood belongs to its community.

Development should improve our suburb—not overwhelm it.

 • Overpopulation & Congestion: More towers mean more residents without adequate parking or infrastructure. Eg Think of Westfield Burwood, the amount of traffic and congestion getting in and out do the centre atm is outrageous!

 • Loss of Character & Heritage: Burwood has unique heritage areas that deserve protection, not overshadowing by concrete.

 • Safety Concerns: A 24/7 nightlife culture can bring late-night noise, alcohol-fueled violence, and safety risks for families and older residents.

 • Decline in Liveability: Burwood is a suburban hub, not a city. Families moved here for a safe, community-driven lifestyle — not to live in the middle of an entertainment district.

We call on the Mayor of Burwood and Burwood Council to:

 1. Halt further high-rise approvals that ignore community concerns.

 2. Protect and preserve heritage areas.

 3. Reconsider any push for a 24/7 nightlife precinct that jeopardises safety and liveability.

 4. Invest in family-friendly spaces, green areas, and infrastructure that support residents — not just developers.

If people want city nightlife, the city already exists. Burwood should remain a safe, family-friendly suburb where heritage and community come first.
