The Issue

In the UK, new regulations are underway to banish certain social media apps to those under 16, while implementing curfews for users aged 16 to 18. This policy feels incredibly unfair and betrays a fundamental misunderstanding of the digital world by policymakers often older and out of touch with today’s youth. I'm tired of being treated like a preschooler who can only watch Cbeebies until I'm 18! This move is not just restrictive—it’s a form of age discrimination that limits our autonomy and freedom online.

Growing up in a digital age means that online interactions form a crucial component of how we learn, communicate, and develop social skills. Social media is not just a pastime; it’s a platform for activism, creativity, and connection. For many, it offers a supportive community and crucial information networks. Denying young people full access to these platforms out of misplaced fear and outdated perceptions is unjust.

Policies like these dismiss the agency and maturity of young people who know how to navigate the internet safely. Rather than imposing bans and curfews, which will likely drive usage underground, we should focus on digital literacy and safety education. Teaching responsible and safe online behaviour will empower youths to make informed choices and protect themselves in the digital landscape.

Additionally, recent surveys suggest that over 80% of UK teens feel that these bans would negatively impact their social lives, academic collaborations, and extracurricular involvements. Protesting this through unified voices across London and beyond can present our stance and urge policymakers to reconsider their approach.

Let’s advocate for policies that respect young people's rights and promote learning and growth, not stifle them. Stand with us against this digital age discrimination. Sign the petition to push back against the banning of social media for kids in the UK.
