Stop automated AI bans and restore human review for creator account enforcement
The Issue
Automated systems are increasingly used to moderate creator accounts. While efficient, these systems lack the nuance and understanding of human reviewers. This can lead to wrongful bans that disrupt creators' lives and livelihoods. For creators like me, whose income relies on platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, and Patreon, an incorrect ban can result in immediate financial distress and long-term damage to our professional reputations.
Every day, thousands of creators, small business owners, and everyday users wake up to find their Instagram or Facebook accounts abruptly disabled, shadowbanned, or demonetized. The cause? Automated AI moderation tools that flag innocent content, mistake normal engagement for spam, and hand down blanket bans without warning.
When automated systems make mistakes—which happens constantly—users are trapped in a nightmare loop. There is virtually no human customer support to appeal to, no meaningful explanation given, and no timely recourse. For creators and small businesses who rely on Meta platforms for their livelihood, these wrongful automated bans result in lost income, erased portfolios, and broken connections with supporters.
AI can be a tool for flag detection, but a machine should never have the final say in destroying a creator’s livelihood or deleting years of digital history.
What We Are Demanding:
1. End Fully Automated Bans & Demonetization: Meta must mandate that no account can be permanently banned, disabled, or demonetized without human verification of the alleged policy violation.
2. Access to Real Human Support: Establish a clear, accessible, and functional appeal process staffed by human representatives, not automated bots sending canned email responses.
3. Transparent Reporting & Warnings: Provide specific, detailed explanations when content is flagged—including exact policy citations and evidence—along with a fair warning system before taking drastic enforcement action.
4. Reinstatement & Compensation for Wrongful Bans: Create a streamlined fast-track review process for accounts flagged in error, ensuring monetization features and reach are fully restored immediately upon resolution.
Meta platforms were built on the backs of creators, small businesses, and community builders. It is time for Meta to respect its user base by stopping over-reliant AI enforcement and restoring human oversight to platform management.
