The Issue
What is happening?
Unexpected rent increase:
- Proposed rise of ~£1,500 for 2026/27 (from £8,026 to up to £9,570).
- Far exceeds recent increases (e.g. £208 this year).
- Returners were not warned or consulted.
Threat to widening access & affordability:
- AMH has long been a subsidised hall and accessible option for working-class students.
- The increase would make the hall inaccessible to many such students.
- Leaves Gannochy as the only affordable hall (only ~70 beds)
Impact on returning residents & committees:
- Over one third of current AMH residents are returners.
- Many committee members will be priced out.
- Risk that AMH will be left without a functioning Hall Committee.
- Committees contribute over 100 hours of unpaid work to build community.
Contradiction with University messaging:
- The University promotes “vibrant hall communities” as a selling point.
- This decision will destroy the community committees have worked tirelessly to create in AMH
Facilities do not justify the new price:
- AMH is located at the far edge of North Haugh.
- Only three full kitchens for ~270 students.
- Historically has been cheaper due to location and amenities.
This decision from the university makes us question their commitment to ensuring that working-class students have accessible options for accommodation
Our Solutions:
- A 5% increase, matching every other hall
- The price of accommodation should be based on amenities, location and condition not room type
- The new Residential Review Board should include Senior Students from all halls, to avoid an oversight like this in the future and ensure student representation in the decision making process
