Stop all fireworks in the Southern Highlands region

Stop all fireworks in the Southern Highlands region
The issue
Tragically, earlier this year in the Southern Highlands, we experienced the devastating loss of a young foal due to the sudden and loud explosions of fireworks. This innocent animal, frightened by the noise, suffered severe distress, leading to its untimely death. This heartbreaking incident underscores a critical issue: the dangers fireworks pose not only to livestock but also to pets, wildlife, and even people, given their sensitive hearing and the potential for accidents.
Fireworks are often set off during celebrations without considering the widespread harm they can cause. Beyond the terrifying noise, which can cause panic and disorientation in animals, there is also the risk of physical harm. Animals may injure themselves while trying to flee from the alarming sounds, and in some tragic cases, such as with our young foal, the stress is simply too much to bear.
Furthermore, humans are not immune to these dangers either. Whether it's the risk of fire, injury from misfired pyrotechnics, or the adverse effects on individuals with conditions like PTSD or anxiety, the dangers are manifold. Many residents are subjected to sleepless nights and heightened anxiety during these displays, making it a community-wide issue.
While we understand the joy that fireworks can bring to some, we must balance this with the safety and well-being of all who reside in the Southern Highlands. There are alternative ways to celebrate that do not involve the dangers associated with fireworks, such as using light shows or silent fireworks designed to minimize noise impact.
We call upon local authorities and event organizers to take immediate action to protect our community and its animals. We urge you to consider implementing a ban on fireworks in the Southern Highlands region and to explore alternative, safer methods of celebration that can be enjoyed by everyone—humans and animals alike.
Please join us in advocating for a safer environment for all creatures in the Southern Highlands by signing this petition. Your support could spare other families and animals from experiencing similar heartbreak and loss.
