Stop AI data centres from being built in Kurri Kurri and the Hunter Valley
The issue
For decades, the Hunter Valley has been cherished for its breathtaking landscapes, vibrant communities, and unique cultural heritage. However, our way of life is currently under threat from the construction of massive data centres. These projects, being foisted upon us without proper consultation, jeopardize the very essence of our community.
Data centres require enormous amounts of energy and water to operate. According to sources such as the Australian Energy Regulator, a single data centre can consume as much power as a small town. This significant energy demand could lead to increased carbon emissions and strain on local resources, which is unacceptable given the global push towards sustainability and climate responsibility.
The residents of the Hunter Valley have not been given a fair opportunity to voice their concerns or participate in decision-making processes. This lack of transparency undermines our democratic right.

Refuse consent for the proposed Kurri Kurri Data Centre
To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly
A proposal has been lodged for a hyperscale datacentre on the former Hydro Aluminium Smelter site at Kurri Kurri. This development will consume 540MW of electricity, more than the aluminium smelter used!
There is insufficient renewable energy to supply 100% of the power for this datacentre.
The developer is in discussions with Snowy Hydro to supply energy from their adjacent gas/diesel power plant.
The local community has already been exposed to eyewatering, choking fumes during the commissioning of the plant on diesel and will not accept ongoing burning of diesel.
The undersigned petitioners therefore ask the Legislative Assembly to
• Refuse consent for the proposed Kurri Kurri data centre
• Refuse consent for the dirty and polluting Kurri Gas Plant to operate as anything but an emergency peaking plant, as designed and previously assessed
• Require all datacentres in NSW to run on 100% renewable energy
• Ensure the industrial land in the Hydro Kurri Kurri Regrowth area is reserved for employment intensive industries, not datacentres
