Stop ABRSM & Trinity from Charging Extra for Paper Certificates to Exam Applicants

The Issue

As a dedicated musician working towards my flute and saxophone grades, I find it unreasonable that music examination boards such as the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) and Trinity College London charge extra for paper certificates upon passing their music grades. This is an additional cost on top of all the money invested in lessons, paper scores, and the exam itself.

The financial strain this places on musicians is substantial. The average cost of a grade 8 ABRSM exam is £87 ($120), with Trinity exams costing similarly. When you add in the cost of lessons which can range from £30-£50 per hour, plus sheet music and other resources, aspiring musicians are already investing heavily in their education.

To then be charged again for a certificate upon passing feels not only unjust but also discourages many from pursuing these qualifications due to financial constraints. It's important to note that these certificates are not just pieces of paper; they represent years of hard work and dedication.

Therefore, we call upon ABRSM & Trinity College London to stop charging extra for paper certificates to successful exam applicants. This change would alleviate some financial burden off musicians who have already invested so much into their craft.

Please sign this petition if you believe in fair treatment for all musicians striving towards their grades without being penalized financially at every step along the way.
