Demolish the double gas-chambers at Randolph County Animal Control, NC
The Issue
Randolph County Animal Control, NC with its double gas-chambers has kill-rates of 82.99% in 2010 ( 6684 animals gassed ) 87.19% in 2011 ( 7344 animals gassed ) and 80.46% in 2012 ( 5395 animals gassed ).. that means say an average of 15 pets gassed daily come rain or sun every single day on an average in 2012.. in 2011 the average animals dying everyday was a whopping 20 per day.. every single day..
In December 2011, Randolph County accepted a $3,000 grant that included a stipulation that the gas chamber be phased out as a means of killing pets in the county pound. More than two years later, however, Randolph has neglected to actually phase out the gas chamber. Johnston County, which also accepted a grant at the same time as Randolph, removed their gas chamber about a year ago.
When the county was asked to either honor its commitment to phase out the barbaric killing machine or give back the grant money, pound officials chose to give back the grant in jan 2014.
It is truly amazing that in this modern age when so many States and Counties are humanely moving away from barbaric practices and mass killing of innocent animals at their shelters, the Randolph County is choosing to continue this archaic method of cruel gassing of homeless animals at its double gas-chamber pound- the whole nation is moving towards humane sheltering practices and saving animals from being killed by adoptions and why is Randolph County Animal Control adamantly clinging to its barbaric kill-machine and extremely high kill-rates? As long as the inhumane contraptions, throwbacks to our less-civilized past, remain in use in North Carolina, we will never be able to move forward to a humane future in which shelters will be places where animals’ lives are protected. The gas chambers in NC must be demolished..
Gassing is a cruel method of euthanasia involving placing animals in a gas chamber without sedation where they suffocate to death. In some shelters, cats are piled in with dogs, small dogs are mixed in with large dogs, they put live dogs on top of dead ones and they all fight each other for the last breath of air.
Inside the chamber, the pets claw at the walls as their lungs burn and they vomit. Many people think that animals quietly go to sleep and die in shelter gas chambers. But the reality is that they fight among themselves, go into convulsions, scream and cry in fear and foul themselves as they die.. The 25 or more minutes it takes to end their lives can be complete torture.
Lethal injections are believed to cause less suffering to the victims than gas chambers do, which explains the growing movement to outlaw the chambers.
The Association of Shelter Veterinarians (ASV) “believes that the use of carbon monoxide for individual or mass companion animal euthanasia in shelters is unacceptable due to significant humane, operational and safety concerns.” The Association lists a number of reasons gas chambers are inhumane (setting aside the fact that killing innocent, healthy animals is inhumane however it is done). The National Animal Control Association also “condemns” gas chambers.
Some shelters argue that other, more humane methods of destroying homeless companion animals are too expensive. On the contrary, the ASV says studies have shown that gassing is actually more expensive than lethal injection,
Gas chamber use has been banned in Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and West Virginia. Even across North Carolina, many counties are discontinuing use of their gas chambers. In the past year Brunswick, Craven, Person, Sampson, Johnston, Cabarrus, Ashe, Iredell Vance and Alexander counties have stopped using their gas chambers. Will you join this movement toward progress and end the use of the gas chamber in your county shelter?
It is time to draw the line & stop the barbaric practice of gassing animals in all states, If it is inhumane in one state it is inhumane in all states..
Animals are living breathing beings that experience pain, suffering, fear & sadness. They are loving and loyal and man's best friend through thick and thin.. they do not deserve to die such a cruel death at the hands of a humans.
At this same time, animal shelters across the country are implementing programs that increase lifesaving and reduce the need to kill healthy and treatable pets. (You can learn more about these programs at http://www.nokilladvocacycenter.org.) As per http://outthefrontdoor.com/ Currently more than 237 ( and counting ) communities in the United States are saving 90 percent or more of the pets they take in, reducing the need for euthanasia mainly to pets who are irremediably suffering. In those cases, lethal injection (which is already recommended by humane and veterinary groups for sick or old animals) is a far more humane option than the gas chamber
We request that you immediately stop using, dismantle and remove the carbon monoxide gas chamber in your county’s animal shelter.
