Reduction in university fees due to the impact of COVID-19
The Issue
Amidst this global pandemic, many of us are undoubtedly facing challenges and obstructions to our daily lives. Within a few months, we have had to abruptly adjust to a new way of living. We have had to rewire our minds to fit a lifestyle which is safe yet effective.
University students in particular, have been detrimentally impacted with majority, if not all, of the content being taught remotely. Though it is not something many like to admit, the student community has been left feeling overwhelmed and academically strained. Further, the decline of student mental health is extremely prevalent at universities; 1 in 5 students suffer from mental health issues and 7 in 10 18-24 year olds have anxiety about employment due to the pandemic. As COVID-19 restrictions and precautions continue, anxiety and uncertainty amongst the student population remains evident.
It's rather absurd to deny the significant impediment such circumstances have caused to student achievement and development. Students are paying £9,250 per year to receive the full student experience at the best value for money: that being face-to-face teaching, full access to all university/academic resources, involvement in student social life (e.g. by participating in society-held events), and support and guidance for career planning and employability etc.
It is not fair to assume that students are receiving the same support as previous years. Therefore, it is not logical to be paying such a substantial amount for an experience so different to the norm.
