Stop cruelty to animals in the name of tradition and culture

Stop cruelty to animals in the name of tradition and culture
The Issue
‘Even bulls have rights against torture’, the Supreme Court observed in its Judgment dated May 7, 2014. It had banned ‘Jallikattu’ in TN and all other such sports inflicting injuries and cruelty to animals in the name of traditions and culture.
Despite Supreme Court order, the ministry of Forest and Environment went ahead to allow 'Jallikattou'. Inspired by this decision, the Goa govt. is also considering reviving 'Dhirio' (Bull fighting).
In Jallikattoo, the bulls are tortured and made to drink certain liquors to incite them to run into the arena where again they are terrified and harrassed by the participants in the sport. Some times the terrified bulls succeed in fleeing the arena and get them seriously injured or even killed.
In Dhirio, the horns of the fighting bulls are sharpened to inflict serious wound to the opponent. Often one or more bulls succumb to their injuries or end up in slaughter houses.
No amount of legislation or supervision can check the cruelty in such sports as the unkindness is an inherrent part of them.
Sati’ and ‘Devdasi System’ were banned though they were the parts of tradition in certain parts of the country for centuries. Instead of cruelty and inhumanity, our real tradition is of compassion and mercy even for animals.
On the appeal of Animal Welfare Board of India (AWFI), the apex court has stayed the Govt. order. AWBI comes under the ministry of Forest and Environment but its members do not get paid for their services. They devote their time for the love of animals. According to news reports, the ministry is contemplating action on AWFI office bearers.
We appeal to Sri Prakash Javadekar, minister of State for Forest and Environment not to make it a prestige issue and to:
1. Withdraw the govt. order allowing Jallikattoo in TN
2. Ban all such sports where the animals are subjected to torture for the entertainment of public.
3. Take no retaliatory or punitive action against the office bearers of AWBI who petitioned for the stay against govt. order.
Please sign this petition and be a part of the movement to stop brutality to animals in the name of sports, tradition and culture. This trend needs to change.
We need 50,000 Supporters before we can take this to the decision makers. Spread the news and generate awareness.
