Springburn in Public - Petition to keep the old Springburn Library in public hands
The Issue

Let the People of Springburn and Glasgow have their say on the future of the old
Springburn Carnegie Library located at 179 Ayr Street G21 4BW.
We, Springburn in Public, are calling on Glasgow City Council and NG Homes to
pause any plans regarding the sale of the Old Springburn Carnegie Library until
meaningful public consultation has taken place. The Old Springburn Carnegie
Library is an important part of our community's heritage and belongs in the hands of
the people of Springburn. Decisions about its future should not be made without first
listening to the people who live, work, and use services in our community. We are
concerned that local residents, community organisations, and the wider public were
not given a fair opportunity to be consulted before plans for NG Homes to take over
the building progressed.
We therefore call on Glasgow City Council and NG Homes to:
- Pause any transfer or future plans for the building until a full public
consultation has taken place.
- NG Homes to make public details of any consultation undertaken, including
how many tenants, local residents, and community organisations were
consulted, how they were selected, and how their views were considered.
- Hold open public meetings so local people can ask questions, share their
views, and help shape the future of this important community asset.
- Ensure that any decision about the Old Springburn Carnegie Library is
transparent, accountable, and reflects the wishes of the wider Springburn and
Glasgow community.
This petition is not about opposing investment in Springburn. It is about protecting
the community's right to be heard and ensuring that decisions about public assets
are made openly, fairly, and with genuine public participation. We believe the people
of Springburn deserve a meaningful voice in the future of the Old Springburn
Carnegie Library.
Please sign this petition if you support a full public consultation before any final
decisions are made.
