Split the 15 rating into 15A and 16 ratings

The Issue

In the last two years, two films have challenged the 15 rating - The Batman and Five Nights at Freddy's. These films are aimed at children and young teenagers and both have a PG-13 in the United States, yet carry a 15 rating in the UK, prohibiting a large chunk of the intended audience from seeing them. Parents have also been confused as to why these movies carry the same rating as stronger material like Men and The First Omen.

My solution would be to split the 15 rating into an advisory 15A and a legally restricting 16 rating. There are several benefits to this:

  • Parents can take their children to the tamer horror movies like Five Nights at Freddy's
  • As the 15 rating would become advisory, less cuts will need to be made for a 12A rating (as often occurs in South Asian films)
  • A 16 rating can encompass some of the harder 15 rated movies (e.g. Men) and some of the tamer 18 rated movies (e.g. Last Night in Soho)
