Child labor in North Korea

The Issue

In North Korea violation of Human rights is not limited just to adults, from a young age, children are forced into labor, including agricultural labor support, item collections, and construction work. Children in prison camps, orphanages, and relief shelters are also subject to arduous labor. Apart from such child labor is also a different kind of child labor in North Korea that is unique to North Korea and we as the citizens of this world have what it takes to change it. The mass games in North Korea are known to require a lot of manpower. During the Arirang festival, about 50,000 children turn color cards at the same time to create an “animated” mosaic-like background. For Arirang performances especially, children practice tirelessly for 6-12 months. Casualties are inevitable when they practice for hours under the scorching sun. The Arirang Festival is one of the main attractions for foreign tourists in North Korea.

With this petition we, the Students of International Human Rights course at Yonsei university along with PSCORE urge people visiting North Korea to kindly exclude the Arirang festival from their tour package, if there are no eyes to see then there will be no children to perform. We urge the foreign travel agencies corporating with North Korean travel agents to exclude the Arirang festival children's show from the tour package. And finally, we urge the UN bodies, European Union, and governments around the world to check and come with an understanding with travel agencies in their country to exclude the Arirang show from the North Korea tour package. We have to start from somewhere to end child labor in North Korea and let's start from here.
