The Library is currently open 29.5 hours, already fewer than most libraries in the city, despite having had library user numbers dramatically increase in recent years. Yet it faces losing another 15 hours bringing it down to 14.5 hours a week! This will mean no children's activities, only a few hours of after school opening, no evening opening, and may mean the end of some of the groups using the library.
Cobbett Road Library is an important community facility in Bitterne Park, not only is it an excellent library with friendly and helpful staff, it is also a thriving community with 21 groups using the library regularly including toddler group, tai chi, adult literacy, book groups, computer skills, coffee mornings, art group, beading group, parents in business, steps to well being and many others, as well as children's activities, evening talks, exhibitions, a safe place for children to complete homework after school, access for the unemployed to computers for CV's and jobs on-line, and a safe and welcoming place for everyone to browse the books, read the paper, research topics or take out a DVD.
All our libraries are important, especially in hard times, each one should be seen as essential to the community it is in. Save Our Libraries.
