The issue

Australia’s native wildlife is in crisis. Critically endangered species are being pushed to extinction, and some of their last remaining habitat is under threat. As we speak, the Gelorup Wildlife Corridor in WA is being bulldozed to make way for a $1 billion highway, destroying the habitat of endangered species with nowhere else to turn.

The Gelorup wildlife corridor is home to ancient trees, sites of Indigenous significance and critically endangered native wildlife, including the beloved Western Ringtail possum. This habitat is crucial to their survival, but the Federal Government has just given the go ahead to destroy it.

This is why we, Friends of Gelorup Corridor, are calling on the Federal Environment Minister, Tanya Plibersek and the WA Environment Minister Reece Whitby to protect our native wildlife: stop the clearing of the Gelorup Wildlife Corridor.

This week, bulldozers began destroying the forest, despite ongoing protests by the community who have been fighting for decades to protect this bushland. The decision to clear this wildlife corridor is unacceptable, when an alternative and less harmful route has been identified and is ready to go.

We are not against building a bypass, which is necessary to cater for growing numbers of tourists and traffic. We are simply asking that the highway is not built over critically endangered habitat.

Please sign this petition to call on the State and Federal Environment Minister to step up: protect WA’s precious wildlife. Stop the bulldozing of the Gelorup Corridor.

Thank you,

Responded
Dear Gelorup community and supporters, Thank you so much for signing the petition to save the irreplaceable wildlife and forests in the Gelorup Corridor. Just like you, I am angered and saddened that this project was approved by both the WA and Federal Government, and that neither State Minister Whitby or Federal Minister Plibersek have acted to do anything about this senseless destruction. I commend and thank the local community that has been staunchly defending the forests and wildlife from bulldozers and mulchers for more than three weeks since the clearing commenced. Contrary to what has been reported, concern about the Bunbury Outer Ring Road and its impacts on the Gelorup Corridor is something that the local community has been raising with successive governments for many years. I myself met with a local group from Gelorup during my first months in Parliament last year and raised their concerns in the WA Upper House. In the context of the species extinction, habitat destruction, and climate crises Australia is facing right now, it is unfathomable that this project has been allowed to go ahead when there is an alternative route that would have far less ecological impact. The State of the Environment Report was released just a month ago highlighting the rapid environmental decline happening across Australia, and yet State and Federal Governments alike push ahead with projects like the BORR that push irreplaceable species and habitats closer to extinction. I urge Federal Minister Tanya Plibersek to reconsider her environmental approval for the BORR. Governments should be protecting our precious wildlife and biodiversity here in Western Australia, not orchestrating their demise. I welcome you to share your concerns with me and stay up to date with our advocacy via my Facebook or Instagram pages.
