Who is Abhijit Mahato ? Abhijit Mahato (picture shown) was a graduate student pursuing a Ph.D.  at Duke university in Durham, North Carolina, USA when his life was cut short by a heinous piece of crime. Abhijit was found dead in his apartment by me and some of his close friends on the night of 18th of January 2008. Till date we de not know what exactly happened that night or who killed Abhijit.

Abhijit hailed from Tatanagar in India although he grew up in Kolkata. He earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Jadavpur University in Kolkata and then went on to do his masters from IIT Kanpur. He was academically brilliant and did very well in studies but moreover he also was a very popular student. He was friendly and warm at heart, always willing to help, always with a smile on his face and a wholehearted laughter that still rings in the ears of those who loved him. He was the rare type of person whom everyone loved.

After completing his master's Abhijit went on to work for a couple of years at GE in Bangalore, India, before deciding to leave for the US to pursue Ph.D. program at Duke University in Durham, NC. While at GE he filed for a joint patent along with another colleague but was not fortunate enough to see it get accepted during his lifetime. Abhijit enjoyed his life at Duke, studying for his courses and research, spending time with his friends, dabbling in photography and playing chess. He was very much  liked by those he came to know and made friends very easily. He was happy and livIng his life to the fullest, working hard to earn his Ph.D., when a senseless piece of crime robbed him of the most precious thing he had - his life. His parents lost their only son, his sister lost her brother, we lost a  friend and the world lost a wonderful person.

It has been more than six years and yet those responsible for this heinous crime have not been convicted. Till date the Durham police has held two persons - Stephen Lavance Oates and Lawrence Lovette Jr.  - at separate times, on charges of robbery and murder. Yet charges of murder against Oates were dropped by the judiciary back in 2013 and more recently Lovette was acquitted by a jury of twelve members of all charges due to lack of conclusive evidence  although a witness had told the court that he had admitted to the murder of Abhijit. After waiting for six long and painful years Abhijit's parents still are waiting for some justice and we do not how they would get it. The Durham police has either failed to nab the main culprit or has failed to gather strong enough evidence to convict the culprit- either way they have failed all of us, friends and family of Abhiijt who seek justice for him.

It is for the sole reason of getting justice for Abhijit, that I sincerely request Mrs. Sushma Swaraj, the honourable External Affairs minister of India, to request the Indian consulate at Washington to take active interest about the investigation of this matter and if required request the Attorney General of North Carolina for involving the FBI in this case.
