K-pop has made a huge impact on the music industry in the last decade. Popular groups such as BigBang, BTS, Twice, and EXO are known worldwide through the use of promotions and advertisements managed by their companies. Promotions are the biggest part of the groups’ success and they are what make the group be known globally. However, SM Entertainment has been criticized for its lack of promotion for the boy group EXO. EXO debuted in 2012 with twelve members, three of whom have left because of unfair treatment that led to a lawsuit. SM Entertainment should give boy group EXO more promotions and fair treatment to prevent the falling out of the boy group, increase their popularity overseas, and maintain the company’s stocks.

As mentioned, EXO originally debuted with twelve members, four of whom were Chinese. Because of the harsh and unfair treatment towards three of the foreign members, legal issues came into play. The three members over the next 3 years of their debut filed lawsuits against SM Ent. because of discrimination against them from the company. Two of the members wouldn’t get much screen time while the other one was always overworked and had to perform even though he had many injuries. Because of this treatment, the three foreign members left the group but are still under the strict contract made by the company which gives them restrictions on certain solo projects they do. Although there are still nine members in the group, the possibility of them falling out is high because the company continues to treat the members unfairly. Because of discriminatory acts, the group could easily fall apart and SM Ent. should improve the way they treat members under their group.

Majority of EXO’s fans are from countries overseas but they don’t have much chance of ever seeing their idols and have to often reside in South Korea or other countries in Asia to see them. This is because SM Ent. doesn’t promote EXO outside of Asia and doesn’t allow them to perform in places where a majority of their fanbase lives, like Europe or North America. Although many other K-pop groups under SM Ent. are allowed to perform overseas, SM doesn’t give the same privileges to EXO and only allows them to perform in Asia. This further restricts and nullifies EXO’s impact worldwide since they are mainly centered in Asia. This also makes it harder for fans to see them. According to an article by Serendipity.com EXO is ranked number two in the list of most successful k-pop groups ever. SM Ent. fails to acknowledge this considering the fact that EXO would become more successful if they were promoted worldwide.

SM Entertainment is known as one of the top three Entertainment companies in all of South Korea. Their stocks always go down and up by very little. This doesn’t affect the company much except for when there are scandals involved and it brings down the stocks. According to kstarlive.com, SM Entertainment’s stocks increased a lot as soon as EXO revealed that they’re going to have a comeback. The stocks went up by 3.37% which truly showed EXO’s impact on the company. EXO also had the best selling album for five years in a row and the fastest outselling concerts that landed them a spot on Guinness World Records in 2018. Although EXO doesn’t get many promotions they are still able to make world records but this may soon not be the case because SM Ent. fails to acknowledge EXO’s talent and accomplishments and focuses on groups that don’t bring much to the company instead.

Increasing EXO’s promotion would benefit the bond of the group, its popularity, and the company’s stocks. EXO, being one of the most successful groups ever, doesn’t get acknowledged by its company and this upsets many fans and leads to them boycotting and not supporting the group anymore. In the words of the President of South KOrea, Moon Jaein “EXO are the kings of kpop.” Although SM Ent. is one of the biggest companies in South Korea they can’t maintain this spot if they continue the ignore EXO’s accomplishments.
