There is undoubtedly a major increase in the feelings of isolation, anxiety, stress, being overwhelmed, depression and loneliness among others created by the extremely unsuccessful transition to an entirely online college environment for students across Ireland amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. As of the 19th of November 2020, Secondary schools have been deemed essential for many months now and school life has returned to normal for the majority of secondary school students with the exception of social distancing and PPE. The Irish government have proposed a €250 sum of money to each college student to compromise for the ‘upheaval’ of online college - no effort is being made to allow college students to return to campus and we are simply being bribed into silence by money. I speak on behalf of a vast majority of people when I say no €250 is worth another semester of online college. With increasing workload and decreasing motivation, I fear for my generations mental well-being. I, along with the signers of this petition propose the notion that college should be deemed essential and smaller classes or tutorials on campus should be made available for students for semester 2.
