Tomorrow the Prime Minister, Premiers and Chief Ministers will meet in Canberra to decide the fate of our gun laws. They must all agree for the Adler seven-shot to be classified as Category D, the highest classification. The Alannah & Madeline Foundation is taking your signatures to Canberra to make sure your voice is heard. We know the pro-gun lobby is very vocal and very well resourced, but we think it’s important the voice of everyday Australians is heard in this debate. CEO Lesley Podesta will deliver the petition to the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) meeting on Friday urging all governments to keep Australia’s gun laws strong. Without the leadership of John Howard and Tim Fischer in 1996, the National Firearms Agreement would never have been struck. We need to see the same kind of leadership in Canberra now to ensure agreement is reached on the Adler seven-shot. This is too important to be hijacked by special interests and electoral politics. We know this is not the time to take a backwards step on gun control, in fact we should be strengthening our laws to deal with emerging technology like 3D printing. As former Deputy Prime Minister, Tim Fischer has said today, "we cannot water down the core principles of the John Howard gun laws.” We don’t want to see a gun culture here in Australia like there is in the US, and we don’t want to see gun control become a political plaything like in the US. The majority of Australians want to keep our gun laws strong because they have kept us safer. Together with tens of thousands of Australians, the Alannah & Madeline Foundation is calling on our leaders to do the right thing tomorrow.
