Petition updateKeep Australia safe from gun violenceYour voice was heard loud and clear

8 Dec 2016
Today the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) agreed to classify the seven-shot Adler as a Category D firearm. This is what we have all been campaigning so hard for since April. And the Alannah & Madeline Foundation was so proud to present your signatures to the Prime Minister of Australia, Malcolm Turnbull. The vast majority of Australians support our strong gun laws because they have kept us all safer, and we’re pleased our leaders heard that message loud and clear. Category D is the highest available classification for firearms under the National Firearms Agreement (NFA) and reflects the Adler’s capacity to fire up to eight shots in quick succession. The Foundation is going to have a good look at the detail of what was agreed by the Prime Minister, Premiers and Chief Ministers - And we will continue to monitor gun laws around the country, in every state and territory, to ensure the change is implemented. Because the strength of the agreement is harmonised state laws and regulations, which eliminate loopholes and inconsistencies. This is obviously an issue very close to the Alannah & Madeline Foundation’s heart and we worked very hard to make sure the right decision was made. We want to thank you sincerely for your amazing support and assure you that we will keep pushing to keep Australia’s gun laws strong. The Alannah & Madeline Foundation is incredibly proud of our advocacy for strong gun laws since the devastating Port Arthur massacre, and we are not done yet.
