The Issue
We Mattah NPC, has been at the forefront of community engagement, working tirelessly to educate and empower young people across South Africa. To date, our organisation has reached 23,000 young individuals, fostering awareness about critical issues such as reproductive health, sexual violence, and Gender-based Violence (GBV). This initiative is driven by the stark reality that many young people experience such violence but remain silent, underscoring the urgent need for education and support.
In the spirit of the historic 1956 Women's March in South Africa, where women united in defiance against unjust laws, We Mattah NPC continues this legacy by advocating for gender equality and the eradication of violence against women and children. Gender-based violence (GBV) in South Africa disproportionately affects women and children, with alarming statistics revealing that on average, 115 women and children are raped every day, and nearly 11 women are murdered daily, often by individuals known to them. These figures highlight the pervasive and devastating impact of GBV on individuals and communities nationwide.
The escalating rates of rape and murder against women constitute a crisis jeopardizing the safety and well-being of all South Africans. Shockingly, only 1 in 9 rapes is reported, while the murder rate for women continues to rise, perpetuating fear, trauma, and eroding trust in justice and safety systems.
Immediate and decisive action is imperative to curb this tide of gender-based violence and femicide. We call for the implementation of comprehensive measures that include enhanced survivor support, strengthened law enforcement responses, and addressing the root causes of violence against women. In addition, we demand the enactment of legislation that provides for harsh punishment for perpetrators of femicide, to send a clear message that such heinous acts will not be tolerated.
By taking proactive steps now, lives can be saved, justice can be restored, and safer communities can be built. Together, we demand urgent and meaningful action from policymakers, law enforcement agencies, and community leaders. By raising awareness, advocating for survivors, and demanding accountability, we can envision and create a future where every woman and child in South Africa lives free from violence and fear.
