My two sons were victims of a brutal stabbing that occurred at the 629 Chauncey Street shelter in Brooklyn, NY. The incident left me shaken, scared, and desperate to understand how such a tragedy could happen in what is supposed to be a safe space. Just days later, another individual fell victim to a similar attack within the same shelter. This pattern of violence has reached a critical point, and the safety of our loved ones is at grave risk.
I am painfully aware that security within the shelter has been scandalously inadequate. There are reports of men harassing young girls and women, following them, groping them, and speaking vile things about what they intend to do. Despite the presence of security personnel, weapons mysteriously find their way into the shelter. An altercation not long ago left two people stabbed and security took no decisive action. This pattern illustrates a severe failure to protect those within the shelter, compromising the well-being of both residents and the surrounding community.
The shelter's curfew policy, intended as a safety measure, is flagrantly disregarded. After the 11 pm head count, people freely move in and out, often without fear of repercussions. This lack of control only heightens the risk and contributes to the cycle of violence and fear.
We cannot stand idle while these heinous acts continue to happen. Community safety should be a priority, and allowing a space that fails to provide it is unacceptable. Therefore, we urgently call upon local authorities to address these serious security lapses immediately.
We propose a temporary closure of the 629 Chauncey Street shelter until thorough security evaluations and policy implementations can be assured. This should include strict enforcement of weapon checks, enhanced security training, and a review of the shelter's operations and management. Additionally, it's imperative that the security company responsible be held accountable and replaced if they are not competent.
