Sexual Assault and Bullying Unchecked Leads to Buffalo Student's Suicide
The Issue
Girl gets raped. Girl gets ignored. Girl gets bullied. Girl commits suicide. We all have heard of this reality, this story. But this is not just some story. This is not just some Netflix drama. This is not just some post. This is Desire.
Desire loved to eat crawfish, her favorite color was a lighter blue, she had a passion for doing hair, and loved to get lost in movies. She was a person. She is someone's daughter.
Desire was sexually assaulted by a fellow male High School student, and this assault was recorded by him. It was distributed and even used as black mail against her on several occasions. This horrid video was circulated to her peers and even to adults in her peers lives.
The actions of this sexual assault was ignored and dismissed, by both her school #131 by her Principal Jamie St. John and BPD. This life altering incident also drove her emotional and undeveloped peers to engage in bullying her relentlessly, both on and off school grounds. From confrontations with her while riding public transportation, to coming to her home, to physically assaulting her, and vandalizing where she lives, to accosting, harassing, and physically assaulting her on school grounds, all the while the schools and BPD are fully aware of these actions and made conscious efforts to dismiss it all even with the mountain of evidence and videos.
This is not simply a matter of race although it does beg the question of what if she was white, affluent, and part of a different school district. Begs the question of what if this was your child, sister, or friend. Begs the very many questions of what ifs.
Lets only think of the question that comes to a head, what if you knew all this before it was too late? What if you knew this happened to your friend, sister, or daughter? Before they killed themselves?
What if you did everything you could have done? What if you did everything you thought and knew was right? This is Serena. This is her mother. She did everything right. After approaching the school and BPD, what else can be done? What else can you do if the police refuse to act on protecting and serving our loved ones from a violent crime? What else can be done if a school admittedly and openly have zero protocols on bullying and catering to those that fall ill to sexual assault?
We demand the creation of saftey protocols regarding both bullying and sexual assault. We demand to establish justice in the form of accountability that falls onto the school’s and BPD’s lack of action and urgency. We demand an outside, third party investigation on both the schools lack of action and the lack of action with the BPD.
We need you. We need you, the people, to fight for all of our friends, sisters, and daughters. This fight, here and now, is a simple signature and a single call. Please sign this petition demanding accountability, demanding action in implementing safety procedures, and demanding an outside investigation on what has happened with Desire. Please sign this petition and call the school board at 716-816-5000. Call the school board to demand the creation of safety protocols, accountability, and a full unbiased investigation. We must do this to protect our loved ones, our friends, sisters. We must act now.
