The Issue

***Sevenoaks District Residents!***

We are collecting your signatures for a petition, stating that we, local constituents, continue to be concerned about the situation in Israel/Palestine, Gaza, and the West Bank. Without an immediate bilateral ceasefire, the humanitarian crisis faced by the displaced population of Gaza will continue exponentially, and any chance of hostages being released will be shattered.

At the time of this petition going live, the death toll in Gaza is over 41,000 (Euro Med Human Rights Monitor), more than double the entire population of Swanley. At least 77,000 people have been injured in Gaza, equivalent to over half the entire population of the Sevenoaks District.

On Tuesday 23rd April at the Sevenoaks District Council meeting, a ceasefire motion presented by the Sevenoaks Green Party will be voted on by all councillors. This means we will officially request our representatives to write to the Secretary of State to call for:

• An immediate, permanent & lasting ceasefire
• Create safe routes for access to humanitarian aid in Gaza, protect aid workers & support civilians
• Release of all hostages
• Suspend all arms export licenses & military collaboration with Israel
• Suspend Israel from International sporting & music events
• Withdraw all public money from funds with investments in Israel

We believe that all in our power should be done to prevent escalating the humanitarian cost of this crisis. Following the interim ruling from the International Court of Justice, it may be the case that with continued support & arms dealing to the IDF, the UK and UK companies may be complicit in war crimes and acts of a potentially genocidal nature.

This unspeakable trauma of war will only continue to harm children, and may create the perfect environment for further radicalisation and anger. Continuing the cycle will only bring strife and does nothing for a peaceful resolution. Continuing to attack civilian infrastructure, healthcare and cultural landmarks will only further the trauma in Gaza. An immediate end to the military action is needed now.

Please support the motion for ceasefire brought by councillors Manston and Lindop of the Sevenoaks Green Party at the Council meeting on Tuesday 23rd April 2024.
