Teach Social and Emotional Learning in Schools

Teach Social and Emotional Learning in Schools
The Issue
My issue involves the fact that while many schools give emphasiss to the importance of social and emotional skills, only certain schools have these skills systematically implemented. According to a national principal survey from CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning), 72% of principals say that their districts give emphasis toward social and emotional skills, however only 40% of districts report having clear pathways of teaching these skills required in their schools. The purpose of my petition is to convince the Sequoia Union High School District to have their schools incorperate either programs or courses that teach SEL (Social and Emotional Learning) to their students. The reason as to why the district must implement SEL is to teach its students essential skills that must be taught during a crititical age within their development. These skills include: self management, social awareness, relationship skills, responsible descision making, collaborative problem solving, as well as discipline and empathy building. My hope is that if I can achieve my goal of getting my local high school district to establish social emotional learning, this message can spread even further to other school districts. This would help students in grades pre-K through 12 navigate not only their education, but also their lives far beyond the classroom.
