Seniors, Veterans, Domestic Survivors Could Lose Housing Protections — Contact Congress!!

The Issue

Fair housing is a basic civil right. It means that everyone — no matter their race, gender, background, or identity — has a fair opportunity to access a safe, affordable place to live in a healthy, vibrant community. But right now, that right is under attack.

The Trump administration is trying to eliminate critical funding, in the 2026 budget, for local fair housing organizations that help seniors, disabled veterans, families with children, survivors of domestic violence, people with disabilities, people of color, and others secure housing free of discrimination. This means there would be zero dollars for the local organizations fighting housing discrimination, enforcing civil rights laws, helping people access critical housing opportunities, and promoting initiatives that create healthy, vibrant, resilient neighborhoods where everyone can thrive. The administration’s actions will only worsen the fair and affordable housing crisis.

Take action now!

Tell Congress to support essential funding for fair housing programs! Please contact your elected officials today and urge them to fully fund the Fair Housing Initiatives Program (FHIP) for $125 million.

Fair housing organizations help people fight sexual harassment, appraisal bias, lending redlining, racial steering, excessively restrictive zoning ordinances, unfair evictions, and other forms of discrimination. They also educate the public about fair housing laws, help local communities expand fair and affordable housing opportunities, and promote efforts that increase economic opportunities in under-resourced areas.

Cuts to FHIP would mean:
•    Shutting down local fair housing organizations that protect families from discrimination.
•    Leaving Black, Latino, LGBTQ+, immigrant, and disabled communities vulnerable to abusive and predatory practices.
•    Not holding bad actors accountable for things like redlining, denying loans based on race, pressuring women for sexual favors to make home repairs, or denying a family an apartment because they have children.

•    Stopping neighborhood revitalization efforts.
•    Stripping away civil rights protections we've fought for over generations.

And it's not just the removal of funding. The administration has also:

o   Shut down investigations into illegal discriminatory practices that harm people and communities.

o   Eviscerated fair housing rules that require cities to address segregation and other unfair practices.

o   Eliminated guidelines that help cities create inclusive, healthy, thriving communities so all children can learn in well-resourced schools with improved learning opportunities.

o   Erased protections against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.

o   Sided with financial companies accused of redlining and discrimination.

o   Cut grants that support communities fighting for fair access to housing and lending opportunities.

o   Hollowed out the agencies that protect fair housing and fair lending rights, including the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and the Federal Housing Finance Agency.

Taken together, the administration’s actions eliminate both local and federal resources, denying everyday people access to the American Dream of safe, stable housing. We can’t let this happen. These actions threaten the future of fair housing — and the lives of people in every state.

We’re calling on Congress to reject the administration’s proposed budget and ensure the Fair Housing Initiatives Program (FHIP) receives full funding so local fair housing groups can serve vulnerable communities. No one should be denied a home because of who they are, where they come from, or who they love.
