Senate block any marriage amendments

The Issue

Passage of any Federal Marriage Amendment would mark the first time in
history that an amendment to the Constitution would restrict the civil rights
of an entire group of Americans.  Furthermore, it is inappropriate to use the constitutional amendment process to resolve politically-divisive issues, particularly at a time when
America faces much more important and pressing challenges.  Our nation's founders understood the dangers of giving government control over religious doctrine and decisions. Any Federal Marriage Amendment would constitutionalize discrimination and undermine Americans’ religious liberty by imposing one religious view of marriage on all Americans.  I urge you to oppose any Federal Marriage Amendment. The Federal
Government should not support discrimination and should not prefer one
religious definition of marriage over another. Such discrimination and
preferential treatment should never be written into the Constitution itself.
