Plea for release of elephant into wild.

Plea for release of elephant into wild.

The Issue

Enclosed herewith are the photographs capture of Wild Elephant inside Wayanad  Wildlife Reserve yesterday morning. Heritage Animal Task Force appeal for urgent release  of this Elephant into the wild. On 1 st January 1996, when O. P. Kaler was the Wildlife warden  of Wayanadu, a Wild Elephant was captured by using tranquilizing gun shot with the help of  Balasubrahmanian of Kerala Forest Research Institute. After this Elephant was caged, Kerala  Forest Department decided to release it into the wild due to the protest from Wildlife  Activists across the world. Another Wild Elephant captured on 10 th December 1995 died in  captivity. Therefore, it is not advisable to keep Wild Elephants in captivity. If a Wild  Elephant is kept in captivity, it will not accept the fodder supplied by the Forest Officials.  More over the physical stress due to the intentional attack by the trained Elephants during its  travel from the forest area to the Lorry will compel it to waive food in take. Sudden stoppage  of its movement will also affect its digestion adversely. This type of physical torture on Wild  Elephant is a violation of various provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act  1960. Now only 10 litres of water and 20 kgms of leaves are provided to this elephants in  captivity. Therefore, it is indispensible to take a stern decision to release this Elephant into  the Wild as early as possible.
