Scrap fees for disabled volunteers at our charitable centre

The Issue
For almost 30 years, my son has been a devoted volunteer at a local charitable centre in Portsmouth, offering his time and effort to support its mission without expecting any financial gain. However, during the lockdown period, his situation became complicated when his benefits changed to the Personal Independence Payment (PIP). Unbeknown to us, this shift in benefits resulted in accumulated charges simply for volunteering, eventually amounting to a staggering £2000. He is now required to pay £55 a week just to work at a place that thrives on his and others' unpaid contributions.
This situation is not just absurd; it profoundly undermines the essence of charitable volunteering. My son, like many others who frequent this centre, dedicates his laborious efforts to support the community, yet he and his fellow volunteers are burdened with fees which are unjust and detrimental. This issue needs immediate rectification given the dedication disabled volunteers like my son show to sustain these charitable efforts.
Volunteering is meant to be an enriching experience, fostering community spirit, and providing invaluable support to those in need. However, these exorbitant charges are disheartening and impede the extraordinary work these volunteers put in. Instead of penalising those who give selflessly, Portsmouth City Council should support them by scrapping such fees entirely.
We are calling on Portsmouth City Council to re-evaluate this unfair fee system and to acknowledge the invaluable contribution made by disabled volunteers to our society. Disabled individuals, who willingly offer their time, should not be financially penalised for their goodwill.
Please sign this petition to advocate for the rights and recognition of disabled volunteers, ensuring they can continue their much-needed contributions without financial burden. Let us restore the fairness and integrity of volunteering at our charitable centre. Your signature could make a significant difference in the lives of those who give so much to help others.
