Scottish Government please reconsider closure of Haven Products supported employment

The Issue

Haven Products supports and employs people with various disabilities at its factory in Larbert. The employees work hard and all enjoy working there. Haven are one of very few employers that supports people in Scotland that are disadvantaged and/or have disabilities. For years our own son Craig struggled to find any other employer that understands or can accommodate/support his needs. There are some voluntary organisations that can support people with disabilities but they do not receive wages for their work. Some of these voluntary roles expect a person with disabilities to attend on a part time or full time basis and often undertake heavy manual labour such as lumberjack work, maintenance of canals/footpaths without pay. Craig has grown up in a family with a strong work ethic so he wants to work and make a contribution to society in a positive manner as well as earn a wage. Craig has worked at Haven for around 9 years. He enjoys the feeling of independence this affords him and being able to work as part of a supportive team.

The Scottish Government have decided to drastically reduce Havens current annual contract and they are yet to have guaranteed work for the coming year. The Scottish Government is also ending the registered charity’s annual contract to prepare and digitise Government documents, putting the jobs of 60 workers, most of whom have disabilities, at risk.

Please consider signing this petition in support of these 60 workers who are some of our most vulnerable in society. The Government do not understand the detrimental impact that this decision will have on the employees. They cannot simply find other jobs. This is devastating for each and every one of them and they need people to advocate on their behalf. Please help if you can. Thank you x
