ImagiNATION: Implement Creative Education Initiatives in Kolkata’s Government Schools.
The Issue
ImagiNation aims to empower young people to think outside of the box. Specifically, we hope to create a space for young girls and boys from lesser privileged communities to understand the opportunities and avenues they can explore in their lives and to realise their potential – outside of the conventional “boxes” society often places them in.
The State Board of West Bengal hardly allows for students to study creatively. We at imagiNATION want to change the face of education by asking our government for more creative and critical thinking classes.

Entrepreneurship classes
Creative writing classes
Theatre classes
We are told that the role of education is to provide students with the best understanding, skills and values for a happy and successful life – both personally and professionally. Unfortunately, the skills and values we have prioritised and the focus on acquiring knowledge about what we assume society, or the future job market, will deem most “worthy” has hampered the overall development of creativity and imagination in students.
Even today, the best in school are those who can most easily recall information and therefore perform on traditional exams. This has always been the case, and despite the changing demands of the workforce today, our system of education has not changed at the same pace. Each and every one of us is born curious and creative, yet schooling, friends, and “proper jobs” have somewhat diluted our ability to explore these creative thoughts and dreams.
One of the most valuable drivers in a child’s education and development is the power of an idea. Ideas come from letting our imagination run wild and it is of paramount importance that schooling provides an environment where students are given the freedom, support, resources, and encouragement to dream and imagine – eventually allowing them to become whoever they want to be; regardless of gender or socio-economic status!
