Removal of confederate statues from the SC State House

The Issue

We the undersigned demand that our governor, Henry McMaster, and our SC District Representative, Joe Wilson, work together to remove the confederate statues & monuments that are located at the State House. Among these statues are the well-known James F. Byrnes, Jefferson Davis, Wade Hampton, and Strom Thurmond just to name a few. All the monuments honoring the figures at the state house represent a stained period in our history. The world is changing, and racism cannot be tolerated. Honoring the figures that tried to ensure the suppression and diminishing of blacks and their natural rights is not acceptable. We cannot control the past, but we can control the future. Keeping these statues & monuments up will send the wrong message not only to those living in Columbia, but to the passing through and visiting the area. The south is famous for being a breeding ground for racist ideals, movements, figures, and even white supremacy hate groups. The year 2020 has exposed the racial injustice that the black community has been fighting for centuries. 2020 can be a year of change, and a year of switching the narrative. We the people cannot do this legally if you refuse to help. We the undersigned, know this petition will shed light on just how many individuals, black, white, Asian, Hispanic, etc, feel. “Black Lives Matter” is not something that will just diminish in a month. “Black Lives Matter” is a statement, a movement, and a lifestyle. You have the power and we have the voice. Let us work together to remove the statues & monuments at the Sate House that honor these figures.
