Say Sorry to Juju

Say Sorry to Juju
The issue
Juliette, or to those who know her, Juju, is a 21 year old with autism.
in 2008 Juju sued Methodist Ladies' College for direct discrimination for failing to provide assistance such that she could attend school. MLC issued a public apology after admitting to direct discrimination. That apology meant the world to her family.
Now Juju is calling for another apology to send a message that disability discrimination is something to say sorry for.
At the Australian Athletics Nationals Open Championship on Thursday 10 April, 2025, the Technical Delegate, Brian Rowe, made a ruling that resulted in Juju not being able to compete in her 400m race and long jump. They failed to allow assistance that would have allowed her to compete, having previously allowed such assistance in 2023. That opportunity has now gone.
A public campaign was launched to #LETJUJURUN with the result that an adjustment made allowed her to run, but her request for assistance from a trained carer was still denied despite there being rules in World Para Athletics that would have allowed that to occur.
This campaign is to send a message to Australian Athletics, and to all sporting bodies, that failing to make adjustments that allow athletes to compete is direct discrimination.
Now her family is asking Juju's community to call upon Australian Athletics to say sorry that she missed her 400m and long jump and to ensure this does not happen to her or any athlete in her position again.
Despite multiple communications to ask Australian Athletics why they failed to use a provision in the World Para rules that would have allowed Juju to compete, no response has been given.
Please sign this petition to have Australian Athletics apologise and to train their staff to prevent future direct discrimination.
