Say no to the redevelopment of Green Space in Royal Pines Resort

The issue

The picturesque landscape of Royal Pines Resort, located in the serene surroundings of Benowa, Queensland, is under threat from a proposed redevelopment plan. This redevelopment (under the guise of housing for the 2032 Olympics) would carve out the very heart of our cherished natural environment for the purpose of building a minimum of four 25-storey towers at the entrance of the RACV off Ross Street, PLUS mixed development structures taking over 9 holes of the golf course. I'm not a golfer, but I love our quiet, our green space and our wildlife. The flood plain will be altered with these extensive high-rise constructions, no doubt increasing our insurance costs, as well as exponentially increasing traffic already unbearable in our work and school commutes on Ross Street, Ashmore Road & Nerang Broadbeach Road. (The numbers on the map below indicate the proposed number of storeys of buildings. Take note of all the 25s. The red line is the existing overpass & roadway into the Eastern Residential Precinct & hotel.)

Our community is deeply connected to this green space, a sanctuary that serves as a home not only to many local wildlife species but also as a retreat for residents who seek solace and leisure amidst its natural beauty. Imagine a future where our children would not have the same chance to play under the shade of its grand trees, or where local birds and animals would lose their habitat, vanishing forever from our doorstep.

This area has long been a cornerstone of environmental balance and community well-being. It's a refuge where people come together, fostering connections that are as organic and resilient as the lush flora it supports. To replace this with high-rise and commercial development is not just a potential environmental catastrophe; it is a loss of culture, heritage, and community spirit.

Local studies have shown that green spaces contribute significantly to mental health, reduce stress levels, and promote physical activity. The redevelopment is a step backwards, undoing the progress we've made towards a healthier community lifestyle. Furthermore, the likely increase in traffic and urban heat due to reduced greenery should not be underestimated. Loss of such public spaces can diminish residents' quality of life and lower property values over time.

We urge the city council, developers, and all stakeholders to consider sustainable alternatives, NOT Royal Pines Resort, that prioritise ecological preservation over short-term profits, leading to long-term pain for locals and visitors alike. Please explore other development opportunities that incorporate rather than eliminate our green spaces and that don't cause detriment to human & wildlife well-being.
**Join us in taking a stand for the preservation of our environment.** Protecting our heritage, preserving biodiversity, and promoting community welfare should be our legacy. Please, sign the petition to keep the green spirit of Royal Pines Resort alive for future generations.

N.B. Without details from the developer, this is what some of the buildings in this redevelopment might look like - this should really concern everyone!
