The issue

Living in the beautiful New Ireland Province of Papua New Guinea, I have always cherished the pristine waters that are not just a natural wonder but a vital resource for communities like ours. Solwara 1 is threatening this heritage, and I feel it is my duty to protect our ocean and secure a sustainable future for our people.

The Solwara 1 project, proposed by Nautilus Minerals, plans to undertake the world’s first deep sea mining operation in the Bismarck Sea. This area is known for its rich biodiversity and is a critical habitat for numerous marine species. The introduction of such an invasive operation poses serious risks to our environment with potentially catastrophic long-term impacts on marine life, and consequently, on the communities that rely upon the sea for their survival, food security, and culture.

Destroying the seabed will not only disrupt marine ecosystems but will also adversely affect the livelihoods of many residents in the New Ireland Province. Our traditional ways of life, our economy, and our natural environment are all intertwined, and a threat to one is a threat to all.

Furthermore, there is insufficient evidence to suggest that Solwara 1 will bring any substantial economic benefits to our communities. Instead, it endangers the fragile oceanic environment and serves corporate interests over those of local populations.

New Ireland Province and Papua New Guinea as a whole deserves development that is smart, sustainable, and prioritizes the wellbeing of its people over short-term profit. There are countless alternatives to deep sea mining that could promote economic development without compromising environmental integrity or sacrificing our future.

I urge you to join me in saying no to Solwara 1. By signing this petition, you contribute to the call for our leaders to reject plans for deep sea mining and push for development strategies that are in harmony with our people's needs and the conservation of our invaluable natural resources. Let us protect our ocean and our future.
