Petition for an Opt Out of Mandatory FOGO Services for Rural and Semi Rural Properties in Western Australia
To the Honourable Minister for Local Government and Local Members of Parliament
We, the undersigned, respectfully call on the Western Australian Government to introduce an opt out provision for mandatory FOGO (Food Organics Garden Organics) waste services for rural and semi rural residential properties.
Many households on larger properties already responsibly manage their own organic waste through composting, animal feeding, mulching and, where permitted, controlled burn offs. These long established practices significantly reduce the amount of waste requiring collection and are an important part of sustainable rural living.
Unlike suburban households, many rural residents produce very little organic waste requiring council collection. In many cases, the only council waste service genuinely required is the general waste bin.
Despite this, ratepayers are being required to accept additional FOGO services regardless of whether they are needed. This has resulted in smaller general waste bins, additional unused bins, increased collection costs and unnecessary expenditure of public funds.
We are not asking for the FOGO program to be abolished. We support sensible environmental initiatives where they are appropriate.
We are simply asking for choice.
We call on the Western Australian Government to:
• Introduce an opt out provision for rural and semi rural properties that can demonstrate they responsibly manage their own organic waste.
• Allow councils to provide a standard general waste service without mandatory FOGO bins where appropriate.
• Ensure future waste policies recognise the unique needs of rural communities rather than applying a one size fits all approach.
This approach would reduce unnecessary costs, respect the self sufficiency of rural households, and ensure ratepayer funds are directed where they provide genuine environmental benefit.
