As millions of families across the U.S. struggle to afford groceries, rent, and basic necessities, the federal government is preparing to spend up to $2 billion to rename the Department of Defense to the Department of War.

President Trump has ordered the Pentagon to begin implementing the name change, even though it’s not officially approved by Congress. The rebrand would involve updating thousands of signs, documents, websites, uniforms, and internal systems — and insiders say the price tag could reach $2 billion.

That’s $2 billion for vanity plaques and digital code — while food banks are overwhelmed, kids are going to school hungry, and families are choosing between heat and groceries.

Even members of Congress — from both parties — have called the plan wasteful and performative. It’s not about national security. It’s political theater, and working families are footing the bill.

Imagine what $2 billion could do instead. It could fund school meals for years, boost food stamps for families in crisis, or help end chronic hunger in communities across the country. Instead, that money is being funneled into a name change that no one asked for — except a president more focused on optics than outcomes.

We demand that Congress reject all funding for this name change and instead direct those resources toward the real emergencies American families are facing: hunger, housing instability, and economic hardship.
