Save Young girls from Female Genital Mutilation in South-East and South-West Nigeria

The Issue

According to Unicef, the rate of Female Genital Mutilation(FGM) otherwise known as Female circumcision, is more prevalent in the South-East(Ebonyi and Imo State) and South-Western (Oyo, Ekiti and Osun) parts of Nigeria. Also,  "Nigeria accounts for the third highest number of women and girls who have undergone FGM worldwide", says Unicef.

It is not an unknown fact that Female genital mutilation (FGM) remains widespread in Nigeria with an estimated 19.6 million survivors and over 16.6 million estimated deaths.

Aside from the numerous existing data on FGM, Millions of girls are being robbed of their childhoods, health, education, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, aspirations, etc. every day by harmful practices such as Female Genital Mutilation(FGM).

Imagine how many children have to go through these disastrous acts, imagine how many of their weak bodies wouldn't be able to take it, and would give up, imagine the pains these babies go through.

Although many would say there are laws against Female Genital Mutilation, the question is "How well is this law being implemented?, How many people have been brought to book for committing the crime of FGM?"

Policymakers, judiciary, law enforcement agents and other power-holders, should ensure the thorough Implementation of the laws, and punish perpetrators.

I'm calling on the National Human Rights Commission, Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, pregnant and lactating mothers - men, grandparents, traditional, community and religious leaders, legislators, justice sector, law enforcement agents, and the entire public, let's come together and end FGM and the discriminatory reasons it is practised.

Let's break the silence around the practice together, so that we can save the lives, health and Rights of millions of Female children in Nigeria today.
