The issue

This petition is about more than just one tree. It is about protecting the character, liveability and environmental future of our community.

The majestic 70+ year-old gum tree at 30 Mortimer Street, Heidelberg, is a significant part of Banyule’s urban forest, providing vital shade, wildlife habitat, cleaner air and natural cooling for surrounding homes and streets. Mature canopy trees like this cannot simply be replaced — it takes generations for a tree to deliver the same environmental and community value.

The property at No. 30 was originally sold with the understanding that this significant tree would remain protected. However, following the introduction of new fast-track planning laws, Banyule Council challenged the proposed removal at VCAT and lost, allowing approval for the tree to be removed to accommodate development.

This outcome stands in direct contradiction to Banyule’s public commitment to protecting and growing its urban forest.

In 2025, Banyule was officially recognised as a Tree City of the World by the Arbor Day Foundation and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation — one of only 12 municipalities in Australia and just two in Victoria to receive this honour. Banyule has committed to increasing tree canopy, reducing urban heat, supporting biodiversity and creating greener, healthier neighbourhoods for future generations.

If a healthy and established 70-year-old gum tree can still be lost despite these commitments, what does this mean for the future of tree protection in Banyule?

Residents are encouraged to plant and protect trees through council initiatives like Adopt a Tree, while significant mature canopy trees continue to be lost to development. Once removed, this tree — and everything it represents — cannot be replaced within our lifetime.

This is not about opposing development. It is about advocating for smarter, more balanced planning outcomes that respect Banyule’s natural heritage and the environmental values our community is being asked to support.

By signing this petition, you are standing for:

• Protection of mature canopy trees
• Cooler, greener and healthier streets
• Habitat for native wildlife
• Preservation of neighbourhood character
• Genuine commitment to Banyule’s Tree City of the World status
• Sustainable development that values nature alongside growth

This is our opportunity as a community to show that mature trees matter — not only in policies and public statements, but in real decisions that shape the future of our neighbourhood.
