Save the Southwood Secondary School drama program

Save the Southwood Secondary School drama program
The Issue
When my eldest daughter first joined Southwood Secondary School, she was shy and unsure of herself. But when she found the drama class, everything changed. The program has helped her blossom into a confident and expressive young woman, forming deep connections with her classmates. Like my daughter, many students have found their voice and their passion through this invaluable program. But now, the drama class at Southwood Secondary School is under threat of being cut due to budget constraints.
The drama program at Southwood isn't just about acting; it's about building confidence, fostering creativity, and developing communication and teamwork skills. These are crucial life skills that benefit students in every avenue of their lives. Numerous studies have shown that participating in arts education improves academic outcomes and boosts emotional well-being. According to the Arts Education Partnership, students involved in the arts are more likely to excel in their academic pursuits and display greater mental health resilience.
The potential loss of this program isn't just a loss for students currently enrolled. Future students would be deprived of the opportunity to benefit from a transformative educational experience. Cutting the program would be a disservice to our school's legacy and to all the students who have found their calling within its walls.
After speaking with the administrators at Southwood Secondary School we’ve been informed that the reasoning behind the program being cancelled is that the ministry has given Southwood secondary school less academic slots as per budgeting for the same if not a few more students for the 2026-27 year. As such the school has no choice but to cancel the one slot dedicated to the dramatic arts for grade 9-12 students. We urge our local educators and the Waterloo District school board to reconsider this decision and allow enough funding so that this program can be offered in the 2026-27 school year.
Please join me in this endeavor to save and support the future of our children. By signing this petition, you stand up for arts education and for the countless students who, like my daughter, have gained invaluable skills and lifelong friendships in the drama class at Southwood Secondary School. Together, we can make a difference and ensure that the arts remain a vital part of our educational system. Please sign and share this petition with others who believe in the power of arts to transform lives.
