Save the Riverside D.I.Y. Skatepark
The Issue
The tennis courts at Riverside Park in the Stockade of Schenectady, NY has been home to some 100+ skateboarders in the past 2-3 years. Starting with a single cinderblock ledge and a manual pad, a group of local skateboarders, with the help of a local skate shop, created a safe space for anyone of any age to learn how to skate. In that, they brought together a community to the city of Schenectady that has not yet been recognized by the local ordinance. Our goal is to show the city that this space is being used every day of the week, no matter what time, and to establish an agreement.
An agreement that involves the city to allow the building of concrete obstacles and ramps by those who choose to take responsibility of the task (within city restrictions). The City of Schenectady has voiced their plans to eventually rebuild the space into pickle-ball courts. This would require funding from the city, something that the local skate scene would not need to request.
HELP US SHOW THE SCHENECTADY CITY COUNCIL THAT THIS SPACE IS SACRED TO THE PEOPLE THAT RESIDE IN IT, AND THAT IT IS VALUED MORE THAN WHAT THE CITY INTENDS IT TO BE USED FOR! THIS D.I.Y. SPACE HAS BROUGHT TOGETHER AN ENTIRE COMMUNITY THAT WOULDN'T HAVE HAD THE CHANCE TO GROW WITHOUT THESE COURTS!
