The Issue

Just a few days ago, I learned that the Range store in South Ruislip is facing a potential closure. This is not just any store; it's a place that means a lot to our community. I have a close friend who works there, along with many of his colleagues. These are not just jobs for them; it's their livelihood. Now, with Marks & Spencer (M&S) submitting a planning application to Hillingdon Council for a massive new superstore at the same site, their jobs are at risk.

The Range at Unit 1, Victoria Retail Park has been an integral part of our community for years, providing value and a wide array of products that cater to the needs of various customers. Unfortunately, if M&S's proposal for a 61,000 sq ft superstore gets approved, all that could be lost. This new store is set to include a vast sales area spread across two levels and a 1,685 sqm food hall. Imagine all the employees at The Range suddenly finding themselves out of work at a time when the economic climate is uncertain.

While M&S claims that there might be more jobs available with the new superstore, what happens to The Range staff who will inevitably lose their positions? Transitioning to new roles or locations can be incredibly challenging and isn't always feasible for everyone. The sudden loss of employment can be devastating, and the uncertainty about job security adds an additional layer of stress on the affected families.

The community of South Ruislip deserves better. We should have a voice in what happens in our neighborhood. It's not just about business expansion; it's about people's lives. We urge Hillingdon Council to reconsider approving the proposal and to evaluate the broader impact on the local community and economy.

There needs to be a balanced approach, one that considers the employment continuity for the current staff at The Range as well as any potential benefits of the new M&S establishment. Let's ensure that development does not come at the cost of people's livelihoods.

Join me in battling for the survival of jobs at The Range. Sign this petition to urge Hillingdon Council to carefully weigh the consequences of this potential closure. Together, we can make our voices heard and protect our community's workforce.
