The Issue

Mousehole, a fishing village in Cornwall, is not only a beloved destination for tourists, it is also home to many residents who rely heavily on public transportation. The recent proposal to remove the Mousehole Harbour bus stop from the M6 bus route threatens to disrupt daily commutes and the livelihood of both residents and local businesses.

For over 90 years, the bus service stopping in the Harbour has been a lifeline for this community. It connects residents to essential services, shops, and healthcare in nearby towns like Penzance, and provides visitors with access to the unique charm of Mousehole. The bus stop's removal would isolate the centre and west side of the village, affecting not only those without alternative means of transport but also the numerous tourists who contribute to the local economy.

According to the latest census, approximately 40% of Mousehole’s population consists of elderly individuals who are particularly dependent on public transport. The deprivation of such a crucial service could lead to social isolation and difficulties in accessing medical and social facilities, impacting their quality of life.

Removing the Harbour bus stop from the M6 route forces a steep, unsafe walk which could be impossible for people with mobility issues. Making one round trip a week to Penzance by taxi costs around £1,040 per year, For residents of pension age, this means they could spend up to 12% of their state pension, or more, on transport annually. This level of transport cost meets common definitions of transport poverty.

Furthermore, the West Cornwall Tourism Authority reports that tourism is a significant contributor to the local economy, with thousands of visitors each year relying on public transport.

The M6 bus route serves as a direct link between Mousehole and Penzance. By cutting the Harbour bus stop on the route, there will be an inevitable increase in car dependency, leading to higher pollution levels and further congestion on the small roads that lead to the village.

We call on Cornwall Council and GO Cornwall Bus to reconsider the proposal to cut the Mousehole Harbour bus stop from the M6 route. By signing this petition, you are supporting the preservation of an essential service for the people of Mousehole and ensuring the continued vitality of this historic village. Together, let's work towards a solution that benefits everyone. Please sign this petition to save the Mousehole Harbour bus stop. Thank you.
