The Issue

For many of us, the Learning Through Play program at Montecito Childcare Centre is more than just a childcare service—it's a community. It's where we, as parents, have found an easily accessible group of families sharing the same experiences, challenges, and joys of raising children in our area. Our children, meanwhile, thrive in an environment designed to stimulate their love for learning, foster friendships, and encourage creativity through play.

Having a safe place to go every Saturday morning run by the kind and knowledgeable childcare experts from Burnaby Family Life has been an invaluable resource for our families. Having a drop in program in this centre has filled a need for families in this area, allowing us to fit interaction with other parents and childcare experts into our hectic lives as parents of young children. Mckercher in South Burnaby is too far to allow regular attendence to be easily feasible, and it is already frequently over capacity. Many of our families have both parents working so we can only access programs on the weekend.

Recently, we learned that the future of this beloved program is under threat, which has raised concerns among all the families who rely on its existence. The possible discontinuation of such a valuable service would not only disrupt our children's routine but also dismantle the support system that so many of us depend on.

Play-based learning is widely recognized for its effectiveness in early childhood education. According to experts and numerous studies, this approach enhances children's developmental milestones in cognitive, social, and emotional areas. The Learning Through Play program at Montecito provides a unique curriculum tailored to foster such growth by allowing children to explore the world around them, engage in problem-solving, and develop interpersonal skills in a nurturing setting.

The elimination of this program would be a significant loss to the community, depriving children of critical early education experiences and separating parents from a vital network of support. Indeed, this program's impact extends beyond academic growth; it strengthens community bonds.

We, therefore, urge the decision-makers at Montecito Childcare Centre and relevant authorities to consider the immense benefits of the Learning Through Play program and to explore all possible solutions to maintain it. Could there be adjustments in budget allocations, fundraisers, or government grant applications to keep this invaluable resource available?

Please join us in our effort to save the Learning Through Play program by signing this petition. Together, we can make our voices heard and strive to preserve this cherished part of our children's early education. Our children deserve the best start in life, right here in the heart of our community. Sign now and support our future.
