The Hibiscus Centre was established in 1984 for the benefit of Newham’s Afro-Caribbean community and local residents in the Maryland area. It was founded by Lucel Tate with a clear vision: to provide a welcoming and safe place where elderly members of the community could meet, socialise, build friendships, and support one another.
We believe that the centre is no longer being managed in accordance with the original ethos and purpose for which it was established. In particular, concerns have been raised about the use of the centre for late-night parties and activities that, in our view, do not reflect the needs or interests of the elderly community it was created to serve.
We are therefore asking members of the community, supporters, and all those who value the legacy of the Hibiscus Centre to join us in this petition. We are calling on the current leadership to step down and make way for a new leadership team that can restore the centre to its original purpose and take the Hibiscus Elderly Caribbean Association forward into the next generation.
Let us protect its legacy, respect the vision of its founder, and ensure that the Hibiscus Centre continues to serve the community for generations to come.
