SAVE the £2 Bus Fare Cap

The Issue

Despite calls from passengers, transport user groups and even the multimillion bus companies themselves to keep the £2 bus fare, the government has deemed that for some reason bus fares need to rise to exorbitant levels.

Hi, my name's Charlie from the YouTube channel It's All About The Journey. I'm a university student and almost lifelong enthusiast and advocate for public transport. I've travelled up and down the country on local buses, and have seen and shared the benefit that this simple, cheap fare system has brought since its introduction in January 2023.

But now, bus fares are going back to the complex, disorganised and expensive mess that they were before. The changes happening in December this year are significant - let met me explain.

For example, a single ticket on the 840 bus between Leeds and Whitby will rise from £2 to £12.50 - an increase of over £10. Some bus operators must already be hiring new financial analysts to calculate how much more they can pay their executives and shareholders. This goes completely against the Labour government's promise to make public transport more accessible. Many people will now not be able to go to work or into town as it's simply too expensive. I particularly feel for those who secured jobs during COVID who will now be unable to travel to work by public transport.

Buses are the most used mode of public transport in the UK, and it's very likely this decision will affect millions of people - maybe you too.

If you want to stop bus fares going up, do the following as soon as possible before the changes are brought in:

1) Write to your local MP. This will encourage changes to be brought in at a more local level, which requires less bureaucracy than through the central government.

2)  Fill out the petition at the top of this page "Save the £2 Bus Fare". Please share this petition with your friends, family or colleagues. If it gets enough signatures it will receive attention from the government or your local authority. The fact the government are bringing in this price increase shows they are completely oblivious to the impact this will have on so many lives - let's try and make them more aware of it.
