Save the 10th East Senior Center in Salt Lake City

The Issue

After years of promises and millions already spent, the Salt Lake County Council just voted to shut down the 10th East Senior Center — a place that hundreds of older adults once called their second home.

This center was more than a building. It was a space where seniors gathered for connection, hot meals, fitness classes, and vital memory support. It gave people purpose and a place to belong. For many, it was the only time in the day they weren’t alone.

In 2022, the county approved a $10 million renovation to improve this facility for the growing number of seniors in our community. Now, after already spending $3 million and starting construction, the Council has voted 5 to 4 to walk away. No public hearing. No real warning. Just a sudden reversal that leaves hundreds of seniors with nothing but broken trust.

Leaders claim this is about saving money. But leaving a half-finished building and wasting $3 million is not responsible. It’s short-sighted and cruel. Salt Lake County’s senior population is growing fast — up 19% in just five years. Our parents, grandparents, and neighbors deserve more support, not less.

We call on the Salt Lake County Council to reverse this decision and finish what was started. Restore funding for the 10th East Senior Center and honor the promise made to our senior community. We urge Mayor Jenny Wilson and Salt Lake City officials to stand up and protect the people who built this city and still call it home.

Our elders deserve dignity, not budget cuts. Sign now to say we don’t turn our backs on seniors — not in this city, and not on our watch.
