SAVE & PROTECT THE CLASSIC BEAUTY & HISTORY OF SORRENTO
Why this petition matters
SAVE SORRENTO FROM IMPRACTICAL & UNNECESSARY CHANGES PLANNED FOR THE FORESHORES
ONCE THESE WORKS ARE COMPLETE, THEY CAN'T BE UNDONE. SORRENTO NEEDS A REFRESH & LONG OVERDUE MAINTENANCE NOT AN UGLY FACELIFT THAT LOOKS CHEAP & GENERIC. YOU DON'T HAVE TO LIVE IN SORRENTO TO LOVE THIS PLACE, WE NEED YOUR HELP .
THE ICONIC 150 YEAR OLD MONTEREY CYPRESS PINES ARE AT THE END OF THEIR LIVES, RATHER THAN AN INDIGENOUS SHRUB, WE ARE LOOKING TO REPLACE LIKE FOR LIKE WITH A COMBINATION OF MORETON BAY FIGS & NORFOLK PINES DEPENDING ON LOCATION.
TO FREE UP OVER 20 CAR SPACES, WE NEED TO REMOVE NEWLY PLANTED SMALL TREES FROM OUR INFORMAL CAR PARK ON THE FORESHORE.
ITS TIME FOR THE OLD STUMP NEAR THE FERRY TO GO & THE AREA AROUND THE CENOTAPH TO BE REFURBISHED AS REQUESTED BY THE RSL, AS WELL AS NAMING THE 100 YEAR NORFOLK PINES AFTER THE LOCAL FALLEN SOLDIERS.
WE MUST PROTECT THE FORESHORE AREAS FROM TASTELESS DEVELOPMENT INCLUDING MASTERPLANS FOR THE AREA NEAR THE FERRY, WEBSTERS CORNER PLAYGROUND, THE WESTERN SISTER AND SULLIVAN BAY - FUTURE GENERATIONS ARE DEPENDING ON US
THE DERELICT TOILET ON THE SAND COULD BE REFURBISHED FOR DISABILITY EQUIPMENT, CHANGE ROOMS ETC, SAVE THEM FROM DEMOLITION.

THESE ARE THE EXISTING COUNCIL MASTERPLANS, THEY ARE GENERIC & EVEN A LITTLE TACKY, EITHER WAY THEY JUST DON'T FIT IN. THIS IS NOT SUBURBIA BUT A BEAUTIFUL FORESHORE. SORRENTO'S BEAUTY IS CLASSIC SIMPLICITY & 100+ YEAR OLD CHARM.
Masterplan 1 – Ferry to the Baths
Issues: Indigenous shrubs and shade structures will block view of the water, footpaths will damage Norfolk Pine roots and make the area look generic, too many different materials and styles, modern seating will look out of place, beach mat could be replaced with hard landscaping, stainless steel rubbish bins and drinking fountains are out of place in an historic setting, cenotaph should be as per RSL requirements - don't settle, we can do better
Issues: Dangerous and dated play equipment, no allowance for all abilities or intergenerational play, trees block sight lines for children, low seating tables with sharp edges, cheap looking bbq shelter inadequate beach access. This plan looks cheap, dated and embarrassing - don't settle, we can do better.
Western Sister Park and Parking
Issues: Car parking area looks good, but the park is covered in unnecessary exposed aggregate paths and looks totally out of character with its surrounds looking more like a suburban park. Large hazardous boulders block the flow, and over planting is not in keeping with Lavender Hill on the other side of the carpark, or the Natural Bushland all around it. Dangerous non compliant sand covered steps need to be removed and replaced with a generous ramp. Currently the entire area is all abilities access as the ground is firm year round - don't settle, we can do better
Issues: A major problem visually is the large 3 storey house being built on the Eastern Boundary, Moonahs will never begin to screen this, there needs to be Norfolk Pines. There is existing historical signage, don’t crowd this relatively small place. Additional trees and plantings are not required unless replacing others. New design does not fit the surrounds, it should blend seamlessly into the bushland, not be like a suburban park - don't settle, we can do better.
