Save Pringle Creek Public School's annual neighbourhood Halloween Parade

The Issue

Students, staff and neighbours have enjoyed the annual neighbourhood Halloween Parade at Pringle Creek Public School for years.  The last one took place in 2019 prior to the pandemic.  Covid restrictions have prevented it from happening for the past few years.  This parade has been a tradition at the school every year for at least 25 years, and likely since the opening of the school.  Some parents of students attended Pringle themselves and have fond memories of participating in the parade when they were students at the school.  Neighbours in the area often line the streets to see the children walk by in costume.  It is a fun school event that brings together the Pringle Creek community.

However, this cherished event has recently been cancelled.  School administration have explained that it is no longer permitted because not everyone comes from a family that celebrates Halloween.  The cancellation not only disappoints the children who eagerly anticipate it each year but also disrupts an important communal tradition that has brought together families in Whitby for years.  Suggestions have been made to invite all children at the school to participate whether they are in costume or not.  This is an opportunity to include all children with a fun and inclusive walk around the neighbourhood.  A suggestion to change the name from Halloween parade to costume parade was not accepted by administration.

In Canada, Halloween is celebrated by approximately 3.8 million children annually (Statistics Canada). It's not just about costumes or candy; it's about community engagement and shared experiences that create lasting memories for our kids.

The Pringle Creek Public School Halloween Parade is more than just an event; it represents a piece of our local identity in Whitby, ON. By cancelling this parade, we risk losing an integral part of what makes our community special.

We urge school administration and Durham District School Board DDSB to reconsider their decision and reinstate this beloved tradition for current students and future generations alike. Please sign this petition if you believe in preserving traditions that foster community spirit and enrich childhood experiences.
